Brad Fawley was born in 1954, smack in the heart of the baby boom, and the events of that generation have shaped who he is. Brad’s father was a WWII fighter pilot and his mother a Marine Corp’s sergeant (and recruiting poster model). After early years at various military stations in the US, Spain and Turkey, the family settled in a small town in central Ohio.

Brad graduated from Marietta College in 1977 with a degree in Biology and every school record for long distance running. He was a two-time NCAA All-American at 5000 meters and cross country. He then earned a Master’s Degree in Oceanography from Old Dominion University before attending the University of Virginia School of Law. Brad has been a litigation attorney since 1983 and tried cases throughout the United States. He also holds three US patents for automotive related technology.

“When I was a kid, I got it in my head that I would read every book in the town library, starting with the first book to the left of the front door and work my way to the end.”

Early influences included Ray Bradbury, Sinclair Lewis and Willa Cather. But the idea of writing his own stories sprung from discovering the Beat writers, especially Kerouac, and Camus. His favorite author is Cormac McCarthy and his favorite novel is McCarthy’s Suttree. He also loves the storyteller in John Updike. Currently, he has been working his way through James Salter, searching for his sometimes stunning gemstone sentences that, unfortunately, are sometimes clouded by puzzling word and tense choices. And, he is in awe of Ocean Vuong’s masterpiece, On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous.

Brad’s debut novel The Frontrunner will be published by Green Writer’s Press in April, 2024. A sequel and screenplay are in the works along with a coming of age novel about a military family surviving reintegration into civilian life in the 1960’s, a novel that explores what it means to be an artist as seen through the eyes of an environmental sculptor who disappears into the wilderness, and a thriller about a young lawyer on the Asperger’s spectrum that takes on his estranged big firm father in an environmental lawsuit over a contaminated farm.

“At 68, I figure if all goes well, I have about 30 years left. But I am starting to worry I am going to run out of time.”

Brad has two children and a grandson. His wife is an actress. They split their time between Guilford, Vermont and Redondo Beach, California.
